Qualifications:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING TIME

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and a minimum of 2 years machining experience and/or training.

Technical school training, apprenticeship program or equivalent work experience operating CNC machines and other metal fabricating machines may be required.

Knowledge of basic trade mathematics, basic computer skills, and ability to read blueprints required and understanding of machinist handbook.

This position requires 4- 6 months' work experience to become proficient in all phases of the job to work independently.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Performs precision work on parts that present straightforward configurations and tolerances between interrelated surfaces. Holds lower tolerances than Machinist II, III & IV. Using clear work orders or other instruction, determines work procedures, machine tools and attachments to be used, along with the sequence of machining operations. Highly repetitive work. Responsible for lying out own work and following pre-programmed requirements. Creates or modifies rough fixturing with assistance by other Machinists. Works with higher-level Machinists to determine methods in support of product development for improved machining processes. Receives work from a supervisor or higher-level Machinists and/or work orders accompanied by well defined blue prints and instructions for the machine and attachments to be used and the processes to be performed. Selects appropriate tools and materials based on clear work orders. Notes tolerances, sets up machines, and performs machining operations according to instructions received. Able to adequately inspect own work with minimal oversight by other Machinists/supervisor. Work may be checked during progress or upon completion. A supervisor or higher level Machinist is responsible for consultation on problems.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a Production Machinist I encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

The Machinist I must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand for extended periods, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.

The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job within the manufacturing environment, the employee is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts. Work is performed inside in areas that are usually noisy and dirty, and where there is a constant danger to the skin and eyes from flying metal chips and abrasive particles; skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds; danger to fingers, hands, and other parts of the body from cutting tools, grinding wheels, rotating pieces, and moving parts of machines. The employee is occasionally exposed to heat, fumes, or airborne dust. Various PPE devices & equipment such as gloves, safety shoes, respirators, dust masks, hearing protection, and glasses may be required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required of the

Machinist I.

Machinist I uses knowledge of various raw materials and products, (i.e., metals, resin, aluminum,

steels, alloys, and other composite materials/systems) along with machining characteristics and

parameters to select proper cutting tools and correct machine feeds and speeds to perform high

production and repetitive job duties.

Makes general distinction between materials, (i.e., simple steels, aluminums, ceramics).

Operates a limited variety of machining equipment as compared to Machinist II, III, & IV, (i.e., lathes, metal cutting saw, vertical millers, grinders) along with hand and power tools.

Uses various standard machine attachments, (i.e., rotary tables, magnetic chucks, taper and universal milling attachments).

Selects appropriate cutting tools according to the type of material being machined and correct machine feeds and speeds necessary to perform the required operation.

Machine adjustments are primarily conversational and performed according to pre-programmed requirements/clear work orders.

Uses, sets up, and maintains measuring/calibrated instruments/tools, (i.e., micrometers, verniers, gauges, indicators, scales, and various standard or preset gauges) to check the accuracy of dimensions.

Reads and interprets clear, straight forward blueprints, program readouts, and technical directives to determine and obtain materials and cutting tools for the job and to visualize the finished part and critical surfaces, dimensions, and tolerances.

Determines the appropriate machine speeds and feeds based on the type of material to be machined and the tolerances desired; and maintains dimensions and tolerances to meet job specifications. Makes manual cutter compensation adjustments to obtain tolerances, (i.e., override one point in machine path to make an adjustment for size control for that particular cut, then machine returns to normal path on next cut)
