Qualifications:
The Emerging Technologies Group within the Electronics & Industrial Business is responsible for assessing the technical feasibility for next-on innovation programs, completing early-stage development for new products and applications and providing technical support for major product launch initiatives as needed in late stages of development. This fast-paced, interdisciplinary team is looking for an Organic Chemistry Technologist to support several strategic growth programs. This position is located at New England Manufacturing and Technology Center in Marlborough, MA and will report to the ET Technical Supervisor.
The successful candidate will be responsible for hands-on laboratory support under the direction of a Principle Investigator and have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art facilities. While the candidate is expected to work as a part of an interdisciplinary team, the candidate is also expected to be able to work somewhat independently in the laboratory, and to occasionally design and execute their own sub-team projects. Currently this role is being offered as a temporary position, but with a possibility for long-term permanent hire.
Required Qualifications • B.S in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry or Polymer Chemistry • In depth knowledge of organic chemicals and basic functional group transformations • Ability to work independently and as part of team • Strong work ethic, high level of creativity and productivity with proven track record of synthetic organic chemistry problem solving skills • Excellent knowledge of NMR, GC/MS, LC/MS, FT-IR as well as interpretation of the respective data • Demonstrated ability to follow direction from lead scientists and engineers • Strong track record of laboratory safety, including identification of mitigation risks, performing process hazard analysis reviews, documenting and writing safe procedures and supporting documents • Adherence to best practices, PPE usage, proper disposal of chemicals, and managing chemical inventories • Experienced in maintaining a laboratory in good working condition as well as ordering supplies and chemicals • Aptitude and willingness to learn a new field of research • Ability to maintain detailed and timely entries in electronics lab-notebook • Good communication and interpersonal skills • Enthusiasm and self-motivation • Strong problem-solving skills • Aptitude for designing experiments and hypothesis driven research
Responsibilities:
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:• Work with lead scientists to design and execute experiments, and based on findings, provide feedback and recommendations for test method improvements and modifications • Independently conducting synthetic reactions, including reaction system assembly, monitoring, product work-up/analysis/characterization, and experimental documentation using an electronic laboratory notebook system.• Isolation and purification of materials by performing routine and sophisticated organic chemistry lab techniques (including vacuum/fractional distillation), advanced distillation techniques, recrystallization, extraction, filtration, and liquid chromatography.• Preparing and analyzing the small molecule and polymer samples through spectroscopic methods (including NMR, FT-IR, GPC, DSC, TGA, XRF etc)• Operation and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation, including: FT-IR, NMR, GPC • Contributing to all phases of project development including planning, execution, data collection, and analysis of lab experiments • Characterization of raw materials and products • Accurate documentation of experimental details and test results in a timely manner • Prepare paperwork for sample shipping and analytical work request
